New Book!
Passion is the answer. It made me care. And it all came from a horse. Because I allowed it to come from a horse. I allowed my very first horse to choose me. To tell me that he trusted me to be his leader. Of his own free will. Not the other way around. It was his choice. And when it happened everything changed. For me, and my horse. He was no longer my horse. I wasn’t his owner. The first line of the movie Hildago said it right. Cash was now my little brother. And I promised him that day that I would love him and he would have the best life I could possibly give him. And I meant it. No stone would be left unturned because I now cared deeply about this horse and I would be searching everywhere to discover how I could make his life better. Not how I could make my life better. My life would get better when his did.
That was 17 years and eleven horses ago. And everything Kathleen and I have learned is covered in this book. Because it’s important that we all get it right. That we all care. That we all take the time to have little brothers.

The Ultimate Horse
Have you ever wondered what kind of person could begin writing a book like The Soul of a Horse less than a year-and-a-half after acquiring his very first one? I have. There were times when I thought I was crazy. How could all of the discoveries we were making be true? Surely someone would have been talking about them before now. “Keep writing,” Kathleen said. And I, the dutiful husband, did. And I’m so glad I did. Read More About This Book
Make Your Life Extraordinary!
Joe Camp showed his first film to every studio in Hollywood but couldn’t get a distributor. Nobody wanted the original Benji. Nobody. Zero. Eighteen months later Variety reported that the movie had garnered the #3 box office gross for the year.
More than forty years later, in 2018, Variety published an article entitled “The Best Movie Dogs of All Time.” There were 20 on the list, itemized by preference. Benji was #1.
Joe hopes that his experience of confronting obstacles is one of promise for all those who have battled the odds for things held dear and, perhaps, surrendered too quickly to those indolent, oft-spoken assurances: You can’t do that! That’s impossible! Give up! Quit! Sit down! Shut up! Go away!
Joe Camp believes that anything is possible if you work hard enough and trust in yourself, that you can accomplish whatever you want to accomplish in life, no matter how impossible it might seem. God planted the passion you have in your heart and He will use it to make your life extraordinary. Against the odds. Joe Camp’s journey with Benji is a riveting true story that dares you to dream. He proved the experts wrong and now, after five Benji movies, he’s at it again with his best selling books that are turning the traditional thinking about horses on its head. The Soul of a Horse – Life Lessons from the Herd is a National Best Seller in its seventeenth printing. Its sequel Born Wild is also a Best Seller and was an Amazon #1 Hot New Release.
Camp had to learn that every devastation that he believed to be surely the end of life as he knew it had to happen exactly as God orchestrated it or there never would’ve been a Benji. Or five Benji films. And there never would’ve been best selling books changing the lives of horses all across the planet. Or a second love of his life after his Carolyn was called home.
In a world scarred by chaos and upheaval, why, pray tell, should we pause to digest a small-time ad guy’s struggle against the system for a fluffy, four-legged dream of superstardom and a few books making life better for horses everywhere?
Why? Because perhaps, in the experience, there’s still hope that the human spirit can rise above the doom and gloom into which it seems so often born. The unknown, the uncelebrated can still mount a white horse, charge off into the distance and accomplish things worthwhile, and hold his or her head high in the process. And, in an industry where sex and violence are seemingly the only sure routes for selling movie tickets, that small-time ad guy can still turn a floppy-eared, G-rated notion into a worldwide phenomenon that brings joy and happiness to the hearts of millions.
Joe’s fondest hope is that you might be inspired to follow your own dreams; to strike out against the odds; to adventure into uncharted waters with passion, honesty and integrity; to never ever give up and to leave the world a better place for the effort. To make your life extraordinary. And that, then, would truly be his most treasured achievement.

Hailed by many critics as possibly the best family film of all time Benji remains one of the best loved films for audiences of all ages. Oprah and Steven Spielberg are among those who testify that Benji is their favorite big screen animal. The Chicago Tribune named Benji one of the best family films of all times. People Magazine placed Benji in their Top-twenty All-Time Must-See Family Movies.
The Los Angeles Times said: “Benji is able to sulk, skulk, peek, pause, do double-takes, worry, frown, scowl and glint in sly triumph. He is so wordlessly articulate that he should do a film without any two-footed creatures at all trying to steal scenes from that small and extraordinary dog with the soulful eyes.”

The New York Times
“One cannot help but be touched by Camp’s love and sympathy for animals and by his eloquence on the subject.”
Michael Korda, The Washington Post
“In Born Wild Joe Camp continues to demonstrate, in simple, unpretentious eloquence, how much we two-legged creatures can learn from horses. One of the rewards for reading the book is that it can be taken literally as the tale of a newborn horse fancier learning his craft, or as the road map for humanity on how to develop leadership in any herd. With humor, affection and discernment, Camp repeatedly underscores that true relationships are built on trust with any creatures.”- Jack L. Kennedy, The Joplin Independent
“One of the best books I have ever read in my life! Totally changed everything I thought I knew about horses! Everyone should read this!” – Jennifer Jeffreys Martin
“Joe Camp gives the kind of interview journalists dream of. Camp is not only what I call ‘notable and quotable,’ he has a palpable honesty that makes readers, listeners, viewers sit up and take notice. In fact, I told a fellow correspondent that Joe Camp is verbal, visual Velcro.” – Dr. Marty Becker – Syndicated Radio Talk Show Host – Best-selling author of several “Chicken Soup for the Soul” books – Popular veterinary contributor to ABC’s “Good Morning America”
“Joe Camp is the genuine breath of fresh air Hollywood has needed for years and years. If he’s got any presumptive airs about him, they are as invisible as his ego – remarkable for a true gentleman who’s accomplished all he has on a wing, a prayer and an unbelievable friend named Benji. When you speak with Mr. Camp, you speak with pure class.”
Thor Tolo, Host, “Live From Seattle”, KGNW
“Joe Camp is a terrific interview! Encounter the work of Joe Camp and you’ll have a changed heart.”
